Stanford on Cusp of Winning Another PAC-10 Crown

LONG BEACH, Calif., March 4. LOOKS like the championship trophy will remain in Palo Alto.

In pursuit of a 24th consecutive title, Stanford had another impressive day at the PAC-10 Championships. Heading into the final day of competition, the Cardinal has piled up 643.5 points, a total that places it comfortably ahead of California (575).

Stanford punctuated the night with a conference-record swim in the 400 medley relay, as the foursome of Jayme Cramer, Gary Marshall, Matt McDonald and Ben Wildman-Tobriner turned in a time of 3:06.69. Cal was second in 3:08.11.

En route to victory in the 100 breast, Marshall positioned himself as an NCAA Championships favorite. The senior sped to the wall in a stellar time of 52.55, ahead of Cal's Caleb Rowe (53.31) and Henrique Barbosa (53.58).

Cramer delivered a triumph in the 100 backstroke, as his mark of 46.30 held off Cal's Milorad Cavic (46.50). Hongzhe Sun was third in the event for the Cardinal.

The 200 freestyle also provided a plethora of points for Stanford. Aside from getting a win from Andy Grant (1:34.38), Skip Kenney's squad finished fourth (Shaun Phillips), fifth (Mike McLean) and sixth (Danny Beal).

Cal's Duje Draganja just missed the conference record in the 100 butterfly, which he won in 45.63. Arizona's Lyndon Ferns was the second-place finisher.

Southern California's Ous Mellouli repeated as champion in the 400 individual medley (3:42.01). The Trojans sit fourth in the team standings with 374 points and are followed by Arizona (327), Arizona State (200.5) and Washington (150).
