Indian River Blowing Away Competition at NJCAA Championships

FORT PIERCE, Fla., March 4. IT was all Indian River Community College during the second day of the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships.

The premier junior-college program in the nation for years, Indian River won every swimming event contested Thursday night, as it swept four women’s events and four men’s events.

As a result, both teams hold commanding leads in the team standings. The women have compiled 317 points, well ahead of Lincoln College (124). The men have totaled 244 points, easily in front of Lincoln College (140).

In the women’s competition, Indian River opened with a rout in the 200 freestyle relay as the quartet of Isabela Tafur, Chelsea Lewis, Victoria Tafur and Kate Perkins went 1:37.66.

Victoria Tafur came back to win the 500 free (5:04.82) and was followed by teammates Cindy Rosal, Missy Helmers, Alana Shawah and Katie Powers.

The 200 individual medley also featured a first-through-fifth finish for the River, led by Clare Clemens (2:08.04). In the 50 free, Indian River could manage only the top four slots, headed by Isabela Tafur in 24.06.

For the men, Indian River kickstarted the evening with a 1:22.04 winning effort in the 200 free relay. The relay featured Kurt Muller, Chris Ward, Guillermo Ramirez and Bill Marcum.

Jeremy Clark took top honors for Indian River in the 500 free (4:34.22) and was followed by teammates Eric Biebuyck and Micah Belew. A top-three sweep in the 200 I.M. followed with Leo Andara (1:53.73) leading Chris McKnight and Juan Ortiz to the wall.

Capping the night for Indian River was Muller with a win in the 50 freestyle (20.91). Indian River also received scoring from Ramirez (second), Ward (fourth), Marcum (fifth) and Chester Smith (sixth).
