SCAQ Coach Killed In Tragic Accident

Ondres Bures, 31, a former NCAA Division II and Masters distance champion, was killed in a tragic accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Bures was working as a coach for the Southern California Aquatics Masters team (SCAQ).

Bures was run over by a pickup truck at the intersection of Santa Monica and Sepulveda Boulevard as he was walking to early morning practice. He died instantly. Bures leaves his wife, Nicole, and his parents, who live in the Czech Republic.

Clay Evans, SCAQ’s head coach, commented: “This is a terrible tragedy. Ondres was a terrific person and a great coach. There’s just no way to understand events like these.

Evans says that every June 22, SCAQ will collect an extra $5 from each swimmer attending workout. That money “will be given as a scholarship to the outstanding rookie L.A. beach lifeguard who is going back to college the next fall,” Evans said. Bures had worked as an L.A. beach lifeguard.

SCAQ will be covering the costs of Bures’ funeral. The lifeguard association is paying to fly Bures’ parents from the Czech Republic to attend the funeral.

Contributions to assist Bures’ wife may be sent to:
