Texas Christian’s H2O Frogs Break Two School and Meet Records on Conference USA Day One

HOUSTON, TX, February 25. THE TCU swimming and diving team broke school and C-USA records in the women’s 200 and 800 freestyle relays Wednesday at the C-USA Championships held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Houston, Texas, per Horned Frog sources.

After the first day of competition, the women’s team is atop the standings with 80 points, while the men’s squad is third with 89 points at the Invitational.

In the first event of the day, the Horned Frog relay consisting of junior Leann Cathcart, sophomore Karen Sandifer, senior Aimee Moreau and sophomore Erica Tate broke the records and claimed the conference championship in the 200-free relay when they finished in 1:33.01. The previous school and conference record was set last season at the C-USA meet when Erin Irons, Moreau, Cathcart and Tate touched the wall in 1:33.78.

In the next relay on the day, the Frogs smashed the previous school and conference records in the 800-free. Sophomore Rikki Covey, freshman Emily Duerringer, sophomore Tara Sullivan and Sandifer broke the school record by more than six seconds as they finished the race in 7:25.96. The previous record, which was set last season, was 7:32.38.

The Frogs are leading the pack with 80 points. Louisville (66) is in second place and Tulane and East Carolina are tied in third with 62 points.

In the men’s competition, junior Kelly McCain was the runner-up in the 1-meter diving competition with 293.65 points. In his career, McCain has one conference 1-meter championship (2004) and a pair of second place finishes (2003, 2005).

In the relays, TCU finished second in the 800 freestyle and third in the 200-freestyle. In the 800, senior Craig Chapman, freshman Kyle Edens, senior Scott McCure and sophomore Yousif Del Valle finished with the third fastest time in school history with a time of 6:40.22.

Meanwhile in the 200, freshman Jonathon Berrettini, junior Brent Norcross, freshman Scott McCracken and junior Teylor Arboleda finished just 1/100th off the school record as they sprinted to a 1:21.39 finish.
