Caitlin Andrew First ASU Swimmer to Win Pac-10 Monthly Honor

WALNUT CREEK, CA, February 21. ARIZONA State University freshman swimmer, Caitlin Andrew, has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Women's Co-Swimmer of the Month for January, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday.

The Pac-10 began the monthly women's swimming and diving honors this season. Andrew shares the honor for January with Stanford freshman Caroline Bruce, a member of the U.S. Olympic contingent in Athens.

Andrew, a freshman from San Antonio, Texas, had individual wins against California and Stanford. She won the 100 butterfly against Cal in 54.0 seconds. Andrew took the 100 back in 54.9 seconds against Cal and in 55.8 versus Stanford. All three times qualified for NCAA consideration. Andrew was also a member of the Sun Devil 200 medley relay team that beat California, swimming the 50 fly split in 24.0 seconds.

Bruce, a freshman from Wichita, Kan., contributed to 5 team wins to The Cardinal in January. She won 12 events and is undefeated this season in the 200 breaststroke. Her times of 2:11 and 2:12 in the 200 breaststroke are both top 5 times overall this year, as was her 1:01.2 in the 100 breaststroke. She is currently ranked fourth in the country in the 100 breaststroke, 6th in the 200 breast, fifth in the 200 IM and 8th in the 400 IM, as well as being ranked in both backstrokes.

This is the first monthly honor for Andrew, and Arizona State University's first Swimmer of the Month all-time. The Sun Devils Trisha Tumlinson earned ASU's first Pac-10 Diver of the Month honor for the month of December.

Arizona State University will travel to the Pac-10 Championships from Wednesday-Saturday, February 23-26, in Federal Way, Wash.
