UCLA Women Dominate USC Trojans in Last Meet Before Championship Season

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 12. SENIOR – UCLA toppled the USC Trojan women 175.5 – 122.5 at USC’s McDonald’s Swim Stadium Saturday (February 12), per Trojan reports.

Senior Trojan Joanna Fargus, who came to Los Angeles from Great Britain, posted a win in her final USC dual meet while sophomores Cait Connealy and Kalyn Keller, who both came to the Trojans from Arizona, also earned firsts, but it was not enough as the Trojans still fell to rival UCLA.

With the win, UCLA secured five points in the Lexus Gauntlet competition, a year-long battle between the two schools in all sports.

No. 20 USC dropped to 1-5-1 overall, 0-4-1 in the Pac-10. No. 11 UCLA improved to 6-3, 3-3.

Fargus, an All-American and one of the top 200y backstrokers in the country, won her specialty event in 1:58.29. She also took second in the 100y back (56.83).

Keller, normally stronger the longer the distance, won the 500y free in come-from-behind fashion, touching first in 4:50.47. She edged UCLA s Shannon Hackett, who led most of the way but was overtaken in the final 50 yards and finished in 4:50.57. Keller was also second in the 1650y free (16:38.85).

Connealy won the 100y free in 51.63, leading wire-to-wire to defeat second-place Bruin Amy Thurman (51.91).

Among UCLA’s top performers included several “A” NCAA cuts. Katie Nelson in the 1650, 16:16.65; Kim Vandenberg 1:47.60 in the 200 free and 1:55.56 in the 200 fly,

USC went 2-3-4 in the 100y fly as freshman Emily Goetsch (54.67), Connealy (55.49) and senior Marisa Kozak (56.00) finished behind UCLA’s Kim Vandenberg (54.31), USC next swims at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., from Feb. 23-26.
