Three Cities (or Maybe Four) Vie to Host ’05 World Champs

LAUSANNE, January 31. THREE cities have thrown their hats into the ring, vying to host the 2005 FINA World Championships… or maybe four, if you count Montreal, which wants a second chance.

FINA, swimming's international governing body, announced today that Athens, Berlin and Moscow have applied to stage the biannual meet, which was stripped from Montreal earlier this month after the Montreal Organizing Committee acknowledged it had been unsuccessful in raising sufficient funds to host the two week-long event, originally scheduled for July 17-31.

Meanwhile, Canadian Press is reporting that Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay returned from Paris empty-handed after a meeting with FINA officials where he presented a new financial proposal in an attempt to win back the meet. However, Trembley told reporters that a second meeting with the international swimming federation will still be held, though no date for the meeting has, as yet, been agreed upon.
