Cal’s Golden Bears Pick Up Win Over Southern California Women, 175.5 – 124.5

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 30. USC’s Kalyn Keller, Blythe Hartley and Emily Goetsch also posted a pair of wins, but it wasn’t enough as Troy’s No. 17 women’s swimming and diving team fell at No. 8 Cal, 175.5 to 124.5, on Friday (Jan. 28), per Trojan reports.

Cal won both the 200y medley and 400y free relays. The Bears were led by Emily Silver, who posted wins in the 50y(:23.33), 100y (:50.75) and 200y (1:48.85) freestyles, and sister Helen Silver, who won both backstroke events(:55.14; 1:58.00).

Anne Babicz lead a 1-2 sweep of the 100 breast, with Genevieve Patterson, 1:02.90, 1:03.05. Patterson got the 200 breast win 2:19.36. Sherry Tsai had two top finishes by leading off the Cal Medley Relay with the best split (:25.99) and then won the 200 IM at 2:02.85.

USC dropped to 1-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the Pac-10. Cal improved to 8-1, 4-1.

Keller, a sophomore, won the 500y free (4:49.91) and the 1000y free (a season’s best 9:55.90) while freshman Whitney Hentzen was second in the 500 (4:54.92) and third (9:58.74) in the 1000. Keller also tied for second in the 200y fly (2:02.67).

Goetsch, a freshman, swept both butterfly events, taking first in the 100y fly (55.68) and easily winning the 200y fly (1:59.64).

Hartley, a junior, led 1-2-3 Trojan sweeps in the 1- and 3-meter springboards with 312.08 on 1-meter and 329.85 on 3-meter. Spring semester transfer Jashia Luna was second in both events while junior Lindsay Draper was third in both.

Senior co-captain Joanna Fargus posted a trio of seconds in the 100y back (55.61, NCAA consideration), 50y free (24.09) and 200y back (1:59.72). Sophomore Cait Connealy finished second in the 200y free (1:49.81) and the 100y fly (56.19) and was third in the 100y free (52.19). Sophomore Kristina Sieper was second in the 200y breast (2:20.55).

USC swims at No. 6 Stanford on Saturday (Jan. 29) at 1 p.m.
