Mary DeScenza Honored as SEC Swimmer of the Week

ATHENS, GA, January 23. GEORGIA swimmer Mary DeScenza was named the Southeastern Conference Female Swimmer of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office.

“We are really happy that Mary received such a deserving award,” said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. ³It is no small feat to be named swimmer of the week in this conference. She is a consummate team swimmer. She never worries about where she is swimming, as long as she has a chance to do something for the team. We are lucky to have her.²

Against fifth-ranked Texas, DeScenza stopped the clock in 1:48.38 to take top honors in the 200-yard freestyle, and she returned to the pool to win the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.91. DeScenza was also a member of Georgia's winning 200y medley relay.

"I am real excited about the award, but I am more excited about us winning our meet," said DeScenza. ³Though I am known as a butterflier, I like to swim a lot of things, and I certainly like helping the team wherever I can. Jack always tells me to be prepared to swim anything, and that is how I prepare for each meet ‹ ready to go no matter what.²

DeScenza's performance led Georgia to a 165-133 win against the Longhorns Jan. 15, and helped the Lady Bulldogs remain undefeated on the season (8-0), including wins against four teams ranked in the top 10.

“She swam all her events exceptionally well in a very hard-earned victory against No. 5 Texas,” added Bauerle.

DeScenza is the first Georgia swimmer to be recognized this season by the SEC, while sophomore Chris Colwill was named the SEC Diver of the Week Jan. 13.

The Georgia men¹s swimming and diving team will be back in action this weekend, as the 12th-ranked Bulldogs face No. 15 Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 11 am in Knoxville.
