Wildcat Women Whip Illini, 173-136

EVANSTON, IL, January 22. THE No. 23 Northwestern Wildcat Women rebounded from a slow start to beat rival Illinois, 173-136, Friday night at the Norris Aquatics Center, reported NU.

The Wildcats reeled off nine straight first place finishes after the Illini opened the meet by claiming the first two events.

Freshman Andrea Hupman won the 50-, 100- and 200-freestyle events to lead the way for Northwestern. Not to be outdone, senior Brielle Bovee added two first-place finishes of her own. Bovee's times in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke (1:03.66 and 2:16.51) are to times for the 'Cats this year and career-bests for Bovee.

Coming off Big Ten Diver of the Week honors two weeks ago, sophomore Leanne Dumais easily captured wins in both diving competitions.

"We did what we needed to do to win this meet," NU Head Coach Jimmy Tierney said. "We are consistently better meet to meet."

The win kicks off a busy weekend at home for Northwestern. At 1 p.m. Saturday NU will take on No. 8 Michigan for Senior Day. The Wildcats ' six seniors — Bovee, Christy Olin, Shuyan Phua, Michaela Restivo, Lori Schwanhausser and Rachel Tepe — will be honored during the meet.

"The team is excited for tomorrow, not only to face Michigan, but for Senior Day as well," Tierney said.
