CAL Wins 23rd Annual Dallas Morning News College Swim Classic

DALLAS, TX, January 15. CAL stayed on top of the team scores(352), holding off the Florida Gators(313), per reports from host SMU, which itself claimed third place in the 23rd Annual Dallas Morning News College Swim Classic, collecting 293 points along the way.

The Mustangs were again unable to win a championship final, but totaled six second-place finishes on day two. Sophomore Ian Clark had two second place finishes for SMU in the 200 back and 200 IM, both coming just behind Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte. Clark swam the 200 back in 1:47.59 and the 200 IM in 1:50.27. Clark gave Lochte a race in the 200 IM and had the lead heading into the last 50 yards, but Lochte showed why he was the Olympic silver medalist in the event and cruised to the finish for the win.

Camilo Becerra's hard luck continued as he was edged out again by Duju Draganja of Cal in the 100 free final. Becerra notched a time of 45.08, just behind Draganja (43.70).

Senior co-captain Ferdi Postma was involved in the closest finish of the night, barely losing out to Brain Hartley of Florida in the 500 free. Postma finished in 4:30.18, just one second behind Hartley and .05 seconds ahead of Steve Roof from Florida State who placed third.

Senior Ric Hampson was the only Mustang on day two to notch a victory. He captured the 'B' final of the 200 fly in 1:50.99.

In diving action, Philip Griffin placed second in the three-meter competition, with a score of 324.10. Eric Sehn of Texas A&M took the three-meter title (356.70).

No. 4 California (352) asserted itself once again and was able to hold off No. 2 Florida (313) and take the 2005 Classic title. The Golden Bears started the night off in exciting fashion, capturing the 200 free relay title (2:55.30) and setting a meet record in the process. Cal also won championship finals in the 200 breast, 100 free, and 200 free relay.

Eric Sehn of Texas A&M claimed the high-point diver award, while Lochte won his second consecutive high-point swimmer honor. Lochte won all four of his individual races (100 and 200 back, 200 and 400 IM) and set a new meet and pool record in the 200 back along the way. His record mark in the 200 back bested the old record by nearly 1.5 seconds.

Arizona St. took fourth place with 248 points, followed by Florida St. (236) and Texas A&M (232).
The SMU men's swimming and diving team returns to the water Jan. 28-29, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Austin, Texas, to take on both Texas and Arizona in a double dual meet.
