UofA Outscores Northwestern and Washington After First Day of Double-Dual Meet Competition

TUCSON, AZ, January 16. AFTER the first day of double-dual competition against Washington and Northwestern on Friday, the No. 4 Arizona women’s swimming and diving team leads the Huskies 111-37 and Northwestern 111.5-36.5. The Arizona men’s team leads the Washington 116-32 and trails Northwestern 56-92.

For the women, the 200y free relay team won with a time of 1:34.41 and in the 400y individual medley, sophomore Whitney Myers finished in first place with a time of 4:22.20. Junior Jenna Gresdal and freshman Courtney Cashion took the top-two spots in the 100y freestyle as Gresdal finished first (50.96) and Cashion was second (51.80).

In the 200y backstroke, Gresdal took her second individual victory with a time of 2:00.02 and junior Marshi Smith finished third (2:06.04). Junior Erin Sieper finished third in the 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:18.11. Senior Emily Mason won the 100y butterfly (56.79) while freshman Lacey Nymeyer was second (56.87) and junior Lisa Pursley tied for third with a time of 56.97. Mason also finished first in the 500y freestyle with a time of 4:55.50 while Nymeyer came in second-place (4:57.83). Arizona finished the day by wining the 400y medley relay with a time of 3:48.20.

On the diving boards for the women, senior Daniela Bemme finished first on the 1-meter with 254.85 points, senior Claire Febvay was second (250.95 pts.) and sophomore Kirissa Cline was third (238.49 pts.). Bemme placed second on the 3-meter with 253.35 points while Febvay was third (249.00 pts.) Head diving coach Michele Mitchell-Rocha said, “we did very well for this time of year. The women did just as I expected on the 1-meter board and were a lot stronger on the 3-meter.”

The men’s 400y free relay team placed second behind Northwestern with a time of 1:22.71. Sophomore Nate Rothman finished fourth in the 400y individual medley (4:07.48) and junior Lyndon Ferns was second in the 100y freestyle (44.63). Freshman Nick Thoman finished second in the 200y backstroke with a time of 1:48.91 and classmate Ivan Barnes was second in the 200y breaststroke (2:02.40).

Ferns won the 100y butterfly with a time of 48.41 and in the 500y freestyle, freshman Matt Biel finished second (4:34.70) and junior Tyler DeBerry was third (4:34.81). To end the first day of competition, the 400y medley relay team finished second with a time of 3:21.01.

“The men were not very tough today,” said head swimming coach Frank Busch. “They did not swim like a top-four team and they will have to come ready to compete tomorrow if they want to come anywhere close to beating Northwestern.”

Junior John Collier was the single male competitor from the men’s squad as he placed first in both the 1 and 3-meter events. Collier tallied 342.67 points on the 1-meter and 329.02 on the 3-meter.

“John (Collier) had good quality scores today,” said Mitchell-Rocha, “He was consistent and that is what it will take at the NCAA Championships.”
