CSCAA Coaches Poll Keeps Georgia Women on Top But Welcomes Stanford as New Men’s Leader

PITTSBURGH, PA, January 14. ALL things were a-jumble in Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving this last month as ranked team after ranked team was upset changing almost every spot in the top 25– solidifying the Top 25 men’s rankings as a work in flux, reported Pittsburgh Head Coach Chuck Knoles Thursday on behalf of the CSCAA.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side of the sport, steady team performances seemed to be the norm and the Top 25 rankings showed few changes.

The Cardinal Men from Stanford made an impressive flight from fifth-place ranking in the last poll to land the number one spot in this, the sixth dual meet poll of the season. For the women, the Georgia Bulldogs settled into their loft at #1 over the women’s dual meet team poll with solid performances throughout December and the season so far.

The seventh dual meet poll is scheduled for publication on Jan. 27, as teams begin their annual “rivalry” competitions across the nation. Just as the Thanksgiving week in November in football brings out the big-time rivalries in football, so too Division I Swimming and Diving “gets into it” in late January and February just two months out from the NCAA Championships with the best of cross-state and in-state match-ups.

The CSCAA Dual Meet Poll is an indication of a team’s ability to win dual meets during the season and is not a predictor of any team’s end-of-the-season placement at the NCAA Championships– although for most of the ranked teams there is a high correlation between their dual meet strength and the school’s ability to score at the Championship meets in March.

There will be nine (9) dual meet polls this year produced every two to three weeks throughout the college swimming season, which is one of the NCAA’s longest continuous seasons of any of the NCAA sponsored sports. The swimming season begins in September and ends in late March for most of the NCAA schools that sponsor the sport.

This season’s NCAA Championships “March Mania”, college swimming’s version of “March Madness” will take place March 17-18-19, 2005 at Purdue University in Indiana for the women. The men’s championship will take place the following week March 24-25-26, 2005 at the University of Minnesota. The College Swimming Coaches’ Association (CSCAA) has sponsored the dual meet poll for 20 plus years now. The CSCAA dual meet Champions will be crowned at the conclusion of the dual meet season in early March, 2005
