British Colombia Hosting Youth Water Polo Tourney with Squads from USA, New Zealand, Japan and Canada

LOS ALAMITOS, CA, December 23. USA Water Polo announced it is sending the U.S. men’s Youth National Team north to Victoria, British Colombia, Canada next week to compete in the 2004 NorAm Water Polo Tournament, running December 28 through 31.

The team, which will be comprised of 12 athletes born in 1987 or later, will be coached by Olympic defender Dan Klatt (Fresno, CA/UC Irvine/Newport WPF). Klatt has been busy since Athens handling the duties for his new position as the head women’s water polo coach at UC Irvine, his alma mater, but is eager to get back into the international arena with the Youth Team.

“This is another great opportunity for these guys to get some good competition in at a time of the year when there isn’t much,” said Klatt.

The trip will also serve another purpose for Klatt and his crew, who will not have trained together for the tournament until it arrives in Canada.

“This will be a chance for the guys to bond a bit and play together and a chance for me to get acquainted with them,” said Klatt, who was named as the men’s Youth Team coach earlier this year.

Klatt and company will be a part of a six-team field that includes two Canadian youth teams, a youth team and a junior team from New Zealand and the Japanese youth team.

Play opens for the U.S. in the round robin-format tourney on Tuesday (December 28) with an 11:45 a.m. game (local B.C. time) against Japan. The U.S. will take on New Zealand’s youth squad at 6:30 p.m. that night.
