IUPUI Finishes 2004 Schedule with Win Over Mid-Con Foe Valparaiso

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, December 22. IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team ended the 2004 year on a high note as they cruised to a dual meet victory over fellow Mid-Con member Valparaiso. The school reported the Jags won eight of the 11 individual events and one of the relays as they were never threatened in the convincing 147-82 win.

Four Jaguar swimmers each won two individual events to pace the win.

The Jags started the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The team of Taylor Williamson (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge), Rob Trame (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee), Alec Sheehy (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and Chris Hutchison (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) took the win with a time of 1:41.37.

Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Jake DeLion (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jefferson) continued the momentum by sweeping the top two slots in the 1000 freestyle. Wheeler's winning time of 10:03.37 was the fourth-fastest in school history. Wheeler dominated the field, winning by 36.62 seconds.

Williamson and Brett Ellsworth (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) made it four-for–four win wins in the 200 and 50 freestyle races, respectively. Williamson outtouched the field by 0.67 seconds with a time of 1:47.20, while Ellsworth edged the second place finisher by 0.60 seconds in 22.34.

Sheehy's second place time in the 200 IM of 2:02.24 was the 12th-quickest in school history.

Josh Riedy (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton S.E.) led Ryan Orzechowicz (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) to a one-two finish in the one-meter diving event. Riedy had a personal season-best score of 222.38 points with Orzechowicz registering 206.18 points.

Swimming the 100 butterfly for the first time this season, Wheeler picked up his second win of the night with a time of 55.37. Hutchison was just behind in 55.75.

Ellsworth completed his sweep of the freestyle sprint events with a winning time of 49.90 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Williamson then tallied his third win of the night with a time of 55.93 in the 100 backstroke.

Chas Grimm (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.72.

Riedy and Orzechowicz duplicated their 1-2 finish from the one-meter diving event in the three-meter springboard diving. Riedy had another personal season-best score of 261.30 points, with Orzechowicz scoring 206.93 points.

Ellsworth, Hutchison, Wheeler and Preston Ray (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) finished out the meet with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.69).

IUPUI is off for two weeks for Christmas break before returning to the pool in the University of Indianapolis Invitational on Jan. 7 and 8.
