Well-Rounded Longhorns Take Every Conference Swimming and Diving Monthly Honor

AUSTIN, TX December 19. THE University of Texas swept the Big 12 Conference Swimmers and Divers of the Month for December, the conference announced and school released this week, as Daniel DiToro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) were honored as Male and Female Swimmers of the Month, respectively, and Matt Bisordi (San Mateo, Calif.) and Monica Maxwell (San Jose, Calif.) received the conference’s Male and Female Divers of the Month, respectively.

The awards were chosen by a vote of the league’s head swimming and diving head coaches and mark the first conference honor for each student-athlete this season.

DiToro, a five-time All-American and NCAA Champion in the 200-yard Medley Relay, recorded an NCAA Automatic Qualifying and career-best time of 46.74 in the 100-yard butterfly at the Texas Invitational, currently second in the nation. DiToro, who finished second in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, also added a fourth-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle with a team-best time of 20.26. The senior also recorded a runner-up performance as a member of the 200-yard medley relay that finished with a time of 1:28.45, while also helping Texas to a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.44). The Big 12 December Swimmer of the Month award marks the first of his career.

Wanezek, an 11-time All-American and two-time Big 12 Conference Swimmer of the Year, receives the Big 12 Swimmer of the Month award for the third time in her career and first time this season. The senior posted runner-up performances in the 50-yard freestyle (22.84), 100-yard freestyle (:49.16) and 100-yard butterfly (53.48) at the Texas Invitational, turning in NCAA Automatic qualifying times in each event. In addition, Wanezek helped her teammates to a first-place finish and the top time in the nation (1:40.35) in the 200-meter medley relay by swimming a 23.17 butterfly split. Wanezek added first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:37.04, which is also tops in the nation to date. Wanezek wrapped up her successful meet with a second-place performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay and a third-place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with times of 1:31.90 and 3:20.32, respectively.

Bisordi posted a strong showing at the Texas Invitational to capture the first Big 12 Diver of the Month Award of his career. The sophomore tallied a victory in the one-meter event with a score of 329.90 points. He followed his win with a fourth-place finish (509.70) in the three-meter dive and wrapped up a solid meet with a third-place performance on the platform with 406.95 points.

Maxwell also earned the first career Big 12 Diver of the Month award after wrapping up the Texas Invitational with a third-place finish in the platform with 382.85 points. The senior also contributed a ninth-place finish in the three-meter dive (432.40 points) and an 11th-place performance in the one-meter event (232.10).

No. 8 Texas men’s swimming and diving is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 13 when it travels to No. 1 Auburn for a dual meet with the Tigers at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, next up for the fourth-ranked women’s swimming and diving team is a trip to Houston, Texas and a dual meet with Rice at 2 p.m.
