Northwestern Captures NU TYR Invitational; Matt Grevers, Elliott Rushton Named Co-Swimmers of the Meet Nov. 21, 2004

EVANSTON, Ill., Nov. 22. POOL records continued to fall like autumn leaves during Sunday's final day at the NU TYR Invitational. The three-day tournament concluded in the Norris Aquatics Center with three more pool records and Northwestern on top in scoring with 1,033.5 points, 126.5 points ahead of second-place Pittsburgh.

Missouri came in third with 880.50 points while Southern Illinois was fourth with 691. Kenyon College rounded out the field with 485 points.

Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) was honored as Co-Swimmer of the Meet for his performance all weekend long, but Sunday was perhaps the most special day of all. Not only did Grevers win two more events, the 200 back and the 100 free, but he also stated his case as possibly the top 100 free swimmer in the country.

Heading into the weekend, Grevers had the third-fastest 100 free time in the nation. Grevers improved that during the 400 free relay Sunday, finishing his lead-off portion of the relay in 43.41 seconds to give him the second-fastest time in the country. This time also set a new Norris Aquatics Center pool record.

Northwestern took advantage of Grevers' spectacular lead-off leg as David Kormushoff (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), and Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) finished the rest of the 400 free relay, with Bubolz touching the wall in a time of 2:57.38. This time also set a new pool record, but more importantly, gives the Wildcats the fastest time in the 400 free relay in the nation so far this year.

Bubolz jump-started the Wildcats in the first event of the night, the 50 fly. Bubolz cruised to victory in a time of 21.77, leading the entire way and winning the event by 1.29 seconds.

Grevers was up next with his back-to-back victories in the 200 back and 100 free. The next event was the 1650 free, where Grevers had some of the spotlight stolen by Elliot Rushton of Division III Kenyon College. Rushton crushed the field, winning the event in a time of 15:14.55.

Rushton also managed to smash two records, the pool record and the Division III record for the 1650 free in the process. The 1650 free pool record was the Norris Aquatics Center's longest standing record, set 14 years ago. This dominating performance helped Rushton split Swimmer of the Meet honors with Grevers.

Alexandrov won the 200 breast for NU, but was given a quite a fight in the closely-contested event. Alexandrov had just swum the 1650 free and his competitors took advantage, jumping out to an early lead. Alexandrov fought back and took the lead in the final 25 yards to win the event. Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) finished third in the 200 breast as well.

Bubolz added one final individual victory for the 'Cats, winning the 50 back in 23.15 seconds.

Northwestern will take a break over Thanksgiving. Some of the Wildcat men will be back in action at the U.S. Open held Dec. 2-4 in San Antonio, while the next dual-meet for the Wildcats will be on January 14 at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
