Richmond’s Brooke Boncher Again Top Performer, But Maryland Men and Women Each Win Terrapin Cups

COLLEGE PARK, Md. November 21. MARYLAND took the titles, but again Richmond’s Brooke Boncher stole the show, as the three-day Terrapin Cup Invitational concluded Saturday night.

Boncher closed out a great meet with a sub-50 second 100 freestyle. Her :49.79 missed the NCAA Div. I “A” standard by only 0.01 seconds. It was her third personal best, school and A-10 record of the meet. Spider teammate Mary Adams won the 200 breaststroke with a 2:17.78, also a Div. I “B” cut. The only other Div. I “B” cut came from Ryan Smith, UConn, in her 200 back win at 1:59.33.

Maryland Terrapins wrote the rest of the story.

The Terp women dominated as a team, scoring almost twice as many points as their nearest competitor. They finished with a total of 1,341, while second-place Richmond had 698.5. The men 1,161.5 team points, defeating runner-up Connecticut (1,017.5).

Maryland got NCAA “B” standards from freshman Meghan Sackett (16:28.96) and senior Elizabeth Lavell (16:44.74) in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Seniors Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.) swam 'B' cuts in the 100-yard freestyle, tying for second place in 51.20.
