South Carolina Sweeps Visiting Clemson Men and Women

Columbia, SC, November 9. USC (South Carolina) Swimming and Diving Team opened up duel meet action tonight at the Carolina Natatorium with a sweep over instate rival Clemson, per Gamecock reports. The Women won 164-79 and the Men won 140.5-99.5.

The women were led by Freshmen Heather Roffey and Christi Williams who each had two first place individual finishes as well as finishing first in the 800 Freestyle Relay.

Roffey finished first in the 1000 Yard Freestyle event with a time of 10:08.62. She also finished first in the 500 Yard Freestyle Relay (4:58.18). Williams met the NCAA B Standard qualification in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a time of 2:01.55 and a first place finish. Williams also met the B Standard in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:49.91.

The combination of Williams, Roffey, Kelli Hobbs and Kelly Giese took home a top finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay (7:37.86). The women's 200 Yard Medley Relay team of Kasey Tamkun, Amanda Cregar, Carolyn McHugh, and Haley Skaggs finished first in an exciting race with a time of 1:45.55.

Senior Haley Skaggs took home the top finish in the 100 Yard freestyle (51.61) and freshman Carly Hensel finished first in the 200 Yard backstroke (2:05.04). South Carolina dominated in both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events with Lauren King, Lindsay Havens, and Tracey Richardson taking the top three positions in both events respectively.

On the men's side, Freshman Dan White led the way with 3 top finishes. White finished first in the 400 IM (4:02.14), the 500 Yard Freestyle (4:33.59) and the 1000 Yard Freestyle (9:23.19). The second and third positions of the 1000 Yard Freestyle were taken by Gamecocks Tim Farrington (9:28.76) and Kevin Cargill (9:29.34).

Junior Tamas Bathazi had a good outing with two top finishes in the 200 Yard Butterfly (1:53.06) and the 200 Yard Freestyle (1:40.36). Other top finishes for South Carolina included Justin Kata in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:07.94), Reid Duff in the 100 Yard Freestyle (46.06), Kevin Cargill in the 200 Yard Backstroke (1:51.12), and the combination of Duff, Bathazi, Colby Mack and Kyle Cormier in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay (6:48.05).

Senior Andy Bradley led the way for the men's divers taking top honors on both the 3 meter (363.73) and the 1 meter (346.20). Ian Balman finished second on the 3 meter (274.27) and Dean Emmerton took third place on the 1 meter (282.98).

Head Swimming Coach Don Gibb was extremely satisfied with the outcome of tonight's competition. I think this is a great way to open the season and it gives us a lot to look forward to throughout the year." Gibb also was impressed with the freshmen performances tonight. This is why we recruited these athletes. We knew they would work hard and help us win."

The Gamecocks return to action next week as they head to Florida
to take on the Gators.
