Short Court World Championships, Day Four Finals: Hanson a Triple Winner with 100 Breaststroke Gold -- October 10, 2004
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, October 10. BROOKE Hanson continues to perform at the highest level as she added the 100 breaststroke to her 50 breaststroke and 100 IM crowns. She picked up a meet record with 1:05.36, breaking the 1:05.38 mark from Sweden’s Emma Igelstrom at the 2002 Moscow championships.
Hanson led another 1-2 sweep for Australia, as the medals from the 50 breaststroke were repeated: Hanson gold, Jade Edmistone silver (1:05.97) and American Tara Kirk bronze at 1:06.33. Amanda Beard (USA) was fourth with 1:06.71, also a repeat position from the 50.
Kirk got the touch at the 50 (:31.19), but it must have been on a long stretch to the wall where she could not effectively perform her turn immediately. Hanson’s body appeared to be in front (even though her :31.31 split was actually third, also trailing Jade Edmistone’s :31.24) and she was able to vault around much more quickly than Kirk and Edmistone, surfacing with a clear lead at the breakout off the 50. From that point Hanson was done with the field and drew away inexorably.
Hanson joins Kaitlin Sandeno with three individual titles and a relay gold in these championships.
