Florida Parent’s Weekend Off to Cautious Start Due to Hurricane Concerns

GAINESVILLE, Fla., September 24. THE annual University of Florida Swimming and Diving Alumni/Parents' “Splash Club Weekend” kicked off Friday, with several events scheduled between Friday and Sunday (Sept. 24-26) on campus, according to information from the Florida Athletic Association

Tickets to the Florida/Kentucky football game will be provided for the former student-athletes and a breakfast will be held Sunday for the alumni.

Twenty-eight Olympians listed below, all with ties to Gator athletics, were expected to be in attendance at the Alumni Banquet on Friday, held at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel

On Saturday, former Gators were to attempt to re-create past glories by competing in the Alumni swim meet at noon at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center pool, but the event was canceled due to the potential impact of Hurricane Jeanne. All other activities surrounding the 2004 Splash Club Weekend, including the Friday night banquet at the Hilton Hotel, are expected to be held as planned. A revised schedule of the weekend’s remaining events follows:

Swim & Dive Alumni/Parent Weekend Agenda

09/25/04 (Saturday)

10:00 am Splash Club Booster Meeting

11:30 am UF vs. Kentucky Football Game

12:00 pm Alumni Meet – CANCELED

2:30 pm – 5:30 pm BBQ – seating available at Gate 3 (inside lobby)

09/26/04 (Sunday)

8:00 am Breakfast – Gate 3 Lobby – O’Dome

The Alumni weekend was to feature former Gator athletes only, as no current UF student-athletes were ever intended to participate in the meet. Coach Gregg Troy was looking forward to a fun weekend. Before the cancellation he said: "We have many accomplished Gator Olympians returning to compete and catch up with their former teammates. It should be an exciting event to watch. It will be all fun and games."

Well, the competition may have been cancelled, but we suspect the catching up with teammates and “fun and games” will still be in full swing!
