Day Four Finals at 2004 Telkom Meet Produce Sparkling Swims

JOHANNESBURG, S.A., September 10. CONTINENTAL records went unscathed, but there were still some fine swims on the final night of the 2004 Telkom South African Short Course Swimming Championships.

The closest challenge to the record book came from George DuRand, 21 Seals-FS, who touched at :53.86, only .19 off the Men’s 100 backstroke record jointly held by Roland Schoeman and Simon Thirsk in 2000 at :53.67.

Tamaryn Laubscher, 20 Tuks-NT, picked up another of her multiple wins in the Women 200 Individual Medley at 2:15.87, only .72 off Julia Russell’s 1997 mark of 2:15.15.

Eighteen year old Troyden Prinsloo, KLOO-KZ, won the Men’s 1500 by slightly over a minute at 14:51.91. Ryk Neethling holds the records at 14:39.04, back in his day as an NCAA champion in the distance events. Prinsloo’s swim is in the world top 20 for 2004.
