Gulf Coast Swim Team Deals With Aftermath of Hurricane Charlie

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. August 16. FLORIDA Gulf Coast Swimming sources reported recently on the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Charley.

We’ve enjoyed watching champions of sport in Athens, but sometimes it brings valuable perspective to see champions of life respond to real adversity. Such is the case with the coaches and members of the Gulf Coast Swim Team, who are showing great resiliency and hope.

GCST would like everyone to know that most everybody from their program made it through Hurricane Charley OK. Many in Charlotte County suffered severe damage to homes and offices. Basic services are out and will be for some time. The coaches checked on most families and they made it through the storm. Coach Don Henshaw and family stayed, even though it looked as though they were going to get the storm's full fury in southern Lee County.

The storm moved north of them and battered Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. Coach Jim Lindberg's home was totally destroyed. Coach Jeff Cain's house came through pretty well.

Coach Scott Holtry's home sustained some damage. The Punta Gorda pool building lost a lot of its roof which had just been replaced two months ago. The pool will be down for a while as will the Port Charlotte High School pool.

Thank God everyone made it. We request that donations be made to the American Red Cross to help the people of Charlotte County, some of whom are our swimmers and their families.
