Men’s 200 Freestyle Prelims: Thorpe Fastest in 1:47.22; Hoogie, Keller, Phelps and Hackett All in the Mix

By Stephen J. Thomas

ATHENS, Greece August 15. IAN Thorpe set the morning standard in the final heat of the 200-meter freestyle prelims when he edged the Flying Dutchman, Pieter van den Hoogenband, by just 0.10 of a second. Italian Emiliano Brembilla was third fastest swimming in the same heat.

Americans Klete Keller (1:47.97) and Michael Phelps (1:48.43) were comfortable winners of their respective heats.

Grant Hackett was off the pace in his first 100 but came home with a fast back half (final 50m split: 26.69) to touch in 1:48.90. Canada has two through in Rick Say and Brent Hayden while Trinidad's 200 meter medley hopeful George Bovell will also swim tonight.

The cut-off fell very neatly at 1:50.00, with only the top 16 swimmers going under this standard.
