2004 Summer Junior National Meet Takes off From Where Nationals End – Literally!

PALO ALTO, Calif. August 11. THE NATIONAL Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Junior Nationals meet is keeping the water warm in the long course competition tank at the multi-pool Avery Aquatic Center. The ConocoPhillips National Championships concluded Saturday and the NCSA Junior Nationals began Sunday.

The first day opened with a bang. Samantha Vandenberge, 15 of Swim Pasadena, won the Girls 800 freestyle at 8:47.08, less than a second from her swim that earned fourth place and Rookie of the Meet in Nationals. Blake Hayter, North Coast, was just an arm-length back at 8:47.32 and Sara Sun made it 1-3 for Swim Pasadena at 8:48.46.

Event 1 Girls 800 LC Meter Freestyle. Hayter and Sun were both top ten finishers at Nationals. Christian Jennings, Boulder, Gabriel Maddalena, The Woodlands, and Aleksa Akerfelds, Middies, also had swims under the 8:56.29 Nationals cut.

The gentleman’s race was won by Andrew Deters, Industry Hills, at 8:18.75. Deters victory margin was over three seconds. Clay Bullock, Cat-FL, Scott Spansail, NOVA-CA, Byron Scoggan, Arden Hills, and Jace Hopper, Desert Storm, also swam under the 8:24.29 senior standard.
