Hoff, Beard Lead 200 IM Qualifiers

By Phillip Whitten

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 9. IF you thought young Katie Hoff was strictly a 400 IMer, here’s a flash: She can swim the shorter medley too. And she can swim it very fast.

Hoff blasted to a 2:13.50 time in the prelims of the 200 IM this morning, only 72-hundredths of a second off Tracy Caulkins’ 20 year-old Trials record and within hailing distance of Summer Sanders’ American record of 2:11.91 from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. The time, a 15-16 national age group record, left the irrepressible just-turned-15 year-old as the number one seed for tonight’s semifinals.

Not far behind is Amanda Beard, the pre-meet favorite, at 2:14.03. Kaitlin Sandeno, who seems to b swimming just about every event is third at 2:15.08, followed by Maggie Bowen, the 2001 world champion, at 2:16.03.

It took 2:19.08 to make the semifinals cut.

The two top seeds are evenly matched in fly and free. Hoff has the advantage in the backstroke, as she split 33.89 this morning, 1.40 seconds faster than Beard’s 35.29. Not surprisingly, Beard has the advantage in the breaststroke, though her 37.85 was only 79-hundredths swifter than Hoff’s 38.64.

Hoff and Beard likely will battle it out for the #1 spot in tomorrow’s final, but there are several other young women who plan to have a say in the matter. Sandeno, Whitney Myers and Bethany Pendleton all should be right with the co-faves at the 100, so they need to focus on a strong breaststroke. Bowen and Kristen Caverly, who have strong breaststrokes, need to swim faster first 100s to hang with the leaders and have a shot at an Olympic berth.
