Dumais Smashes Austin Cup Record At All-American Diving Invitational

AUSTIN, TX – University of Texas freshman Troy Dumais posted one of the best three-meter diving performances in NCAA history Saturday night, as he posted an 11-dive score of 716.45 points to smash the Austin Cup record at the All-American Diving Invitational, held at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center’s Browning Diving Pool.

Conclusive NCAA records were not immediately available, but if Dumais were to repeat his performance at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in March, he would break the meet record (674.55 set in 1990 by Scott Donie of Southern Methodist) by more than 40 points. Saturday’s 700-point performance is the fourth of Dumais’ career, and the first as a collegian. Dumais won a record 16 U.S. Junior National titles, and has already amassed six Senior National titles.

Dumais earned at least one 9.0 on six of his 11 dives, including two 9.5s on a forward 3-1/2 somersault pike and a 9.0 on a forward 2-1/2 somersault pike with two twists. He needed 8.0s and 8.5s on his final dive – a reverse 3-1/2 somersault pike – to score over 740 points, but instead posted 5.5s and 6.5s from the five judges and still broke Kent Ferguson’s 1996 meet record of 692.75 points.
