FINA Men’s World League Water Polo Joins the Aquatics Summer Spectacular in the Southland

Long Beach, CA, July 5 – THE U.S. men’s water polo team ended a four- game FINA World League losing streak with an impressive 10-7 win over Australia before 2,024 fans at the Charter All Digital Aquatic Centre in Long Beach, Calif. on Wednesday night (June 30).

After the recent excitement of the FINA Women’s Super Final in Long Beach featuring the entire Athens field, USA Water Polo has announced that the men’s international game now comes to southern California for important pre-Olympic competition. The day after the USA bested Australia, the roles were reversed in a rematch at the Charter All Digital Aquatic Centre with the Aussies taking an exciting 11-9 victory via penalty shoot-out.

The USA and Australia, along with Hungary and Serbia & Montenegro, are part of Group B of the 2004 Men’s FINA World League which has games set all across the Southland from the Charter All Digital Aquatic Centre in Long Beach to the USC’s McDonald’s Swim Stadium (1984 Olympic site) to Coggan Family Aquatic Center in La Jolla to various local high schools.

The USA opens with games at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach to officially kick off Team USA’s mini-tour of Southern California. Over the next few weeks, Team USA and its bracket mates – Australia, Hungary and Serbia and Montenegro – will battle it out in five different pools around the area before returning to Long Beach for the Super Final July 16-18. The four teams take the battles down to La Jolla’s Coggan Family Aquatic Complex on July 7. On July 10, the teams switch opponents – with the U.S. taking on Serbia and Montenegro and Australia facing Hungary – for a set of contests at McDonald’s Swim Stadium at USC. The World League regular season will close out with those same match-ups at Mission Viejo’s Capistrano Valley High School on July 11.

All this activity is prelude for the squads to return to the Long Beach Swim Stadium July 16-18 for the 2004 FINA Men’s Water Polo World League Super Finals. The U.S. will compete along with the other five qualifying teams from league play in this six-team extravaganza.
