Bovell, McLean Set Caribban Records

KINGSTON, Jamaica, July 5. TRINIDAD and Tobago Olympians George Bovell 111 and Sharntelle Mc Lean set new meet records on the third night of the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships (CISC) at the National Stadium Olympic-sized pool in Kingston, Jamaica last night.

Bovell blasted down one-lap of the pool to win the men's 50 m free in 22.75, setting a meet record and new national mark. Before him, Mc Lean sped to 25.91 , a new meet record that bettered Leah Martindale's 1996 mark of 26.63. It was also a new PR. Her teammate Linda Mc Eachrane was second in 26.91.

George's younger brother Nicholas picked up silver in the Boys 15-17 version of the event, touching in 23.74 to the Domincan Republic's Jacinto Ayala 23.76.

On Saturday after George and Nicholas Bovell had splashed to two meet record-breaking swims, T&T's Sharntelle Mc Lean added to her two gold medals on the first day with a CISC record-breaking and winning effort in the Girls 18 & over 100m butterfly. Mc Lean, who is currently preparing for her Athens Olympics appearance under top German Olympic coach Michael Lohberg, sped to 1:04.35 that erased Jamaican Olympian Janelle Atkinson's previous mark of 1:05.00 two years ago. Her teammate Ayeisha Collymore also secured gold in the Girls 15-17 version of that event, coming from behind to stroke past favourite, St Lucia's Natasha George (1:06.67 to 1:07.35).

The other gold medal performance came from T&T's Boys 11-12 4x 100 m free relay. The quartet of Walter Romany, Cadell Lyons, Christian Homer and Ryan Rigues steered the local squad to a victory over Suriname and Jamaica, registering a 4:14.32 timing.

Trinidad and Tobago (12 gold, six silver and 12 bronze) have slipped further behind Puerto Rico (14gold, 13 silver and nine bronze) but are still in second spot (497 to 399.5 ) while host Jamaica (10 gold, nine silver and seven bronze) are third (362).
