BRISBANE, Australia, July 5. WORLD record-holder Leisel Jones posted the fastest time this year in the 100 breaststroke when she had a convincing win over arch-rival Brooke Hanson in 1:07.13 to 1:07.97.
Hanson had upset Jones at the Aussie trials in March when she clocked the previous best time of 1:07.17. Tonight Jones turned in 31.96. The two Aussies are the only two swimmers globally to go under 1:08 this year.
Distance ace Grant Hackett clocked an impressive 3:47.79 in the 400 free to win from Craig Stevens 3:50.79. Hackett holds the year’s fastest time at 3:43.35 with Ian Thorpe 3:46.60 and Klete Keller 3:47.38 both from the Janet Evans Meet, together with Italian Massi Rosolino as the only swimmers to have been faster in 2004.
Choosing to skip the 400 free, Ian Thorpe had an impressive win in the 100 freestyle recording 49.49 (he went 49.60 at Long Beach last month) ahead of former world record-holder Michael Klim 50.47, Todd Pearson 50.55 and rookie Eamon Sullivan 50.69. Ashley Callus was a distant seventh in 51.50.
