Caribbean Championships Begin Today

KINGSTON, Jamaica, July 2. THE 15th Caribbean Islands Swimming Championship (CISC) was officially opened last night at the opening ceremony at the National Stadium Pools.

The six-day event begins full competition today.

Top teams are expected to be host, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands.

Jamaica – hosting the championships for the third time – is expected to field a full team of 94 athletes who will compete in swimming, water polo and synchronized swimming.

Puerto Rico and Trinidad will be fielding strong teams as well – 98 and 79 swimmers respectively.

Others participating in the 20-nation tournament are: Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, Barbados, Martinique, the US Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Antigua/Barbuda, The Bahamas, Bermuda, The Cayman Islands, St Lucia, Cuba, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Dominica, Suriname, Dominican Republic and Grenada.

The age-group championship will see competition in the 11-12 year-old category, 13-14, 15-17 and 18 and over in swimming. In water polo there will be only one age group which is 20 and under. Synchronized swimming will have action in 12 and under, 13-15 and 16-18.
