Burt Shaw, Water Polo Pioneer, Dead at 72

Burton W. “Burt” Shaw, a member of the US Water Polo Hall of Fame and recipient of the US Water Polo Award, the highest honor in the sport of water polo, died December 27 in Los Angeles. He was 72.

Shaw was a long-time volunteer and a great leader in the sport of water polo. In his career he served as Chairman of the AAU Water Polo Committee from 1974-78 and was twice the President of United States Water Polo (1978-80 and 1988-90). He was a member of the Board of Delegates of the United States Olympic Committee, was a member of the FINA and ASUA Technical Water Polo Committees and served as the Water Polo Competition Director at both the Los Angeles Olympic Games and the Atlanta Olympic Games.
