Canada’s Andrew Hurd Takes Three at Charlotte Ultra Swim

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 16. FAST times were the order of the day — actually four days — at the Charlotte Ultra Swim classic, June 10-13 in Charlotte, N.C.

Women's Highlights
NCAA champion Kara Lynn Joyce took the women's 50m free in 25.62, just edging former Georgia teammate, Maritza Correia, 25.67.

Georgia freshman-to-be Amanda Weir won the 100 free in 55.92, nipping Georgia grad Stef Williams, 56.14.

The 200 free featured a very close three-wway battle that was won in 2:02.46 by another incoming Bulldog freshman, Elizabeth Hill. Joyce was second in 2:02.56 with Mary Descenza third in 2:02.57.

Comebacking Jessica Foschi scored an impressive victory in the 400 free in 4;16.86. In a close three-way battle, Swim-Macon's Laura Conway took the 800 in 8:45.35 ahead of Stephanie Carr (8;45.97) and Hill (8:46.60). She repeated her triumph in the 1500, again nipping Carr, 16:42.34 to 16:44.91.

2000 Olympian Courtney Shealey won the 100 back in 1:02.12, while the 200 back went to Erica Meissner in 2:14.62, one second ahead of Canadian Liz Warden.

Olympian Kristy Kowal was a double winner in the breaststrokes, taking the 100 in 1:09.30 and the double century in 2:30.02.

Demerae Christianson upset Mary Descenza in the 100 fly, 59.45 to 59.78. Descenza finished on top in the 200 fly in 2:11.34, almost a second ahead of Hill, 2:12.30.

Canada's Liz Warden swept the two medley events, edging Kowal in the 200, 2:16.92 to 2:17.66, and taking the 400 handily in 4:47.63.

Men's Highlights
Cullen Jones took the 50 free in 23.42 while Nick Kintz was the winner of the 100 in 51.53.

Canadian Andrew Hurd swept the 200, 400 and 800 frees, clocking 1:51.53 in the 200; edging Fran Crippen in the 400, 3:55.23 to 3:56.34; and again, in the 800, 8:11.48 to 8:12.86, both times coming from behind in the latter stages of the race.

The 1500 fell to former Harvard star John Cole, who emerged victorious in an exciting six-way battle. Cole finished in 15:38.61, followed by Crippen (15:39.82) and Robert Margalis (15:40.53).

David Cromwell swept the backstrokes, touching in 57.96 and 2:04.61.

Vlad Polyakov did the same in the breaststrokes, with times of 1:04.04 and 2:18.42.

Daniel Cruz was the winner of the 1100 fly in 54.62, while Michael Raab had it all his way in the 200 with his 1:58.94.

Robert Margalis took the 200 IM in 2:06.29 while Canada's Chuck Sayao won the 400 IM in 4:25.22.
