Sports Publications, International Welcomes Two Interns for Summer

PHOENIX, June 9. SPORTS Publications International is pleased to welcome two new additions to our team. Lauren Weinstein and Nicole Leffer are completing summer internships at our offices in Phoenix, Arizona. Although the pay isn't anything for the girls to write home about, the perks-– partying with Ian Thorpe, Michael Klim and Craig Stevens –are great.

Lauren is a 20-year-old rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, where she swims the 200 fly and middle distance freestyle for the school’s Ivy League Division I swim team. Prior to college, Lauren swam under Graham Westerberg at Fox Chapel Killer Whales in Pittsburgh, PA.

She is a communications (specializing in marketing) and Jewish history double major, and will be vital this summer in helping Sports Publications behind the scenes in our marketing department.

“This internship is such a great opportunity for me,” said Lauren “My aspiration is to work in the swimming world, and this experience will provide me with the tools necessary to do so.”

Lauren spent the past two summers giving private swimming lessons in Pittsburgh. By the end of the summer she was instructing 36 children ranging in age from 4-14. Besides swimming and giving lessons, Lauren loves to read, travel and “be adventurous.” Last summer she spent a month traveling through Argentina and Uruguay with a group of college students doing social-action work. This fall, she will study abroad at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.

Nicole is a 21-year-old rising Senior at the University of North Carolina- Wilmington. She swam through high school with the top-ranked Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta, Georgia. She also swam her freshmen and sophomore years on UNCW’s Division I team, specializing in the sprint freestyle events.
She is majoring in psychology and getting a certification in professional writing.

Nicole is actively involved with her school newspaper, as well as the school’s new swim club and the psychology research department. Last summer Nicole conceptualized from start to finish a visitor’s guide to Wilmington, North Carolina, which had a distribution of approximately 8,000 over the course of the summer.

Nicole’s internship will involve research and writing for swiminfo.com and all three magazines, as well organizing a portion of a current website redesign project.

“This is an amazing team to get real-world professional experience with,” said Nicole. “I have already learned so much, and am excited to see where this summer will lead.”

While they are in Arizona, both Lauren and Nicole are also assistant coaching under former US National Team Director, coach Dennis Pursley at the prestigious Brophy East Swim Team.
