LSU Head Coach Jeff Cavana Resigns

BATON ROUGE, La., April 13. JEFF Cavana, LSU's head swimming coach for the last four years, has resigned from that position to pursue other professional opportunities, he announced on yesterday.

Cavana became LSU's head swimming coach in August of 2000 after serving as an assistant coach for the Tigers for 10 seasons. Cavana first joined LSU as an assistant to then-head coach Rick Meador in 1989. He was promoted to head coach of the Tiger swimming program when Meador stepped down in 2000.

As a head coach and assistant coach, Cavana has helped lead the LSU women's team to a top 20 national ranking in nine of his 16 seasons while the men's team has achieved seven top 20 finishes in the national rankings.

This past season, the LSU men's team finished seventh in the SEC and No. 21 in the nation while the women's team placed ninth in the SEC and No. 24 in the country.

"Jeff has been a valuable member of the LSU athletics program and we thank him for his service and his commitment to LSU swimming," said LSU athletics director Skip Bertman.

Bertman said that a search would begin immediately for a new head swimming coach at LSU.
