Meb’s NCAA Championships, Day One: Auburn Sets NCAA Mark in Winning 200m Free Relay

By Phillip Whitten

EAST MEADOW, New York, March 25. WHEN Auburn’s women’s team won its third straight NCAA crown last week in College Station, Texas, the men vowed they, too, would bring another title home to Toomer’s Corner.

That quest for a second straight men’s crown was jump started tonight in the first event when Auburn ran away from a very strong field to win the 200 meter free. The Tigers’ time of 1:23.75 is almost two seconds under the world best of 1:25.55 by The Netherlands, but since the Auburn team was composed of swimmers from more than one nation, it will not be recognized by FINA.

It does stand, however, as a new NCAA and US open record.

Arizona and Stnford tied for second at 1:25.69, with Stanford getting credit for an American record.

Auburn’s George Bovell had the fastest leadoff time, 21.40, while the Tiger anchor, Fred Bousquet, had the fastest relay split at 20.55.
