Hall to Fight FINA Ruling

1996 Olympic gold and silver medalist Gary Hall, Jr., who was given a three-month suspension by FINA earlier this month after testing for marijuana, a non-performance-enhancing drug on May 15, has told Swimming World he will fight the suspension. When the suspension was announced, Hall had already served 87 days under a provisional suspension, so his penalty amounted to an additional three days.

Hall argued that under FINA rules at the time, the organization had no authority to test for drugs other than steroids and other performance- enhancing substances in out-of-competition testing.

The three-month suspension was meted out by FINA’s doping panel, which rejected the FINA Executive’s argument that the marijuana positive was a second offense for Hall. The penalty is the standard penalty given for a first offense for marijuana.
