COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 18. NOTRE Dame freshman Katie Carroll was the upset winner of the consols in the 200 IM, taking the lead at the halfway mark, lengthening it on the breaststroke leg and powering home to touch in 2:12.28.200 meter individual medley

The final featured Auburn’s Kirsty Coventry who set a new NCAA/US Open mark of 2:09.34 in prelims, doing battle with USC’s Kaitlin Sandeno and Arizona’s Whitney Myers.

Sandeno went for it from the start, taking the race to her opponents. For 175 meters she was ahead of Allison Wagner’s world record pace from 1993. Sandeno, a 2000 Olympian drove for the wall, but fell just short of a global mark. Still, her 2:08.11 was an American, NCAA and US Open record, and the second-fastest swim in history.

Coventry was second in 2:08.88, Myers third in 2:10.23.
