Wright State Men and UW-Green Bay Women Lead Horizon League Champs

CHICAGO, Ill, February 25. THE UW-Green Bay men's and women's 200 freestyle relay teams set school records on the first day of the 2004 Horizon League swimming and diving championships in Chicago Wednesday.

The women's 200 medley relay squad also improved the Phoenix school record, leading the women's team to an early advantage in the overall point scoring with 134 points.

The meet format has changed for 2004, with three swimming event finals added to the schedule in addition to diving preliminary rounds. The Phoenix fared well under the new format.

"It's too early to tell," said UW-Green Bay head coach Jim Merner on whether the changes played to the strength of his deep Phoenix squads. "I'm very pleased after one day. It was a good start."

Juniors Abby Mayer, Sarah Ciganek and Laura Brager were joined by freshman Kristin Carlson on the first Phoenix conference titleist of the meet, winning the 200 free relay in 1:36.18.

The 1000 freestyle provided a point boost for the Phoenix women with a 2-3-4 finish. Freshman Molly Cox was the runner-up in 10:30.41, followed closely by classmate Janet Weidert in 10:30.62 and junior Robin Becker in 10:31.61.

The Wright State men lead the meet with a total of 124 points with three events completed. Cleveland State is second with 99 and Wisconsin-Green Bay is close behind them with 97 points. UW-Milwaukee has 88 points with Butler (67) and UIC (60) rounding out the field.

Individually for the WSU Raiders, Julie Coghlan, a senior from Largo, Fla., won the 1000-yard freestyle for the women with a time of 10:17.18. The men's team of Elvis Cirikovic, John Matzen, Todd Benanzer and Dejan Antolic won the 200-yard freestyle relay. Both the men and the women won the 200-yard medley relay.
