AUSTIN, TX – An estimated 500 fans witnessed a classic battle Saturday as No. 1 Stanford defeated the No. 3 University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team 122-121 after the Cardinal won the 400-yard freestyle relay in the afternoon’s final event.

Despite the loss, several Longhorns, led by sophomore Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky. / Covington Catholic HS), turned in outstanding performances. Dusing snared Texas’ first automatic qualifying time for the 1999 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, to be contested March 25-27 in Indianapolis, Ind. His time of 1:45.80 in the 200 butterfly was .32 seconds under the automatic standard and gave him the event win over defending NCAA Champion Matthew Pierce and runnerup Steven Brown. In all, the Longhorns posted five NCAA consideration times, six Zone Diving qualifying marks and Dusing’s automatic time.
