UC Irvine Women’s Water Polo: Fifth-Ranked Aztecs Top Anteaters 4-2

IRVINE, Calif, February 13. AFTER No. 14 UC Irvine Anteaters (4-4, 0-1) lost to the No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs (4-1, 1-0) in the first MPSF match of the season for both teams at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

San Diego State took a 2-0 lead with goals by Holly Hartzell and Dominique Delgado in the first quarter. Senior Melissa Fernandez (Redlands HS) cut the lead in half with a first quarter goal. The Aztecs scored twice in the second quarter with goals by Chelsy Smith and Savanah Kelly to take a 4-1 lead into the half.

Senior Michelle Carey (Chino HS) scored in the third quarter to get within two goals, but neither team would score again.Senior goalkeeper Sunceray Chamblee (Carlsbad HS) had 9 saves on the day for UCI. Ashley Zabel had six saves for the Aztecs.
