Delta State Sweeps Henderson State, falls to Ouachita in Div. II Clashes

CLEVELAND, Miss., Feb. 3. THE Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams split a pair of weekend matches, winning their openers against Henderson State, and falling to Ouachita Baptist in the finale.

Against Henderson State, the Statesmen defended their home waters, picking
up a 62-50 win, while the Lady Statesmen won 64-49. Sean Spiegel, who has
already qualified for the NCAA Division II national competition, improved
his season high score, collecting a 290.55 in the one meter dive. Spiegel
also turned in a solid performance in the men's 50 yard freestyle event,
finishing first with a time of 21.74.

In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Cagri Sapmaz, Kyle Combs, Kris
Koepp, and Trent Trabona picked up a key win, edging Henderson State's lead
team by a mere .34 seconds.

Nilay Aydin turned in an impressive performance in the women's 200 yard
freestyle, finishing in 2:01.40, edging HSU freshman Dana Simerly by .33
seconds.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen returned the next day for a competition
with Ouachita Baptist and the Tiger Sharks emerged victorious, with OBU's
men capturing a 148-92 decision, and OBU's women winning 129-109.

The DSU combination of Cagri Sapmaz, Kyle Combs, Robby Haney, and Trent
Trabona picked up a big win in the men's 400 yard medley relay, collecting
11 points for the Statesmen effort. Later, Statesmen swimmers captured the
top three spots in the Men's 1000 yard freestyle event, as Tripp Davis
finished in 9:57.45, collecting 9 points; Derrick McDonnell finished in
10:25.72, collecting 4 points, and Matt Downs finished in 10:28.75,
collecting 3 points.

Kasey Perkins captured the championship in the Women's 200 Yard individual
medley, posting a time of 2:15.90. In the Women's 200 yard breaststroke,
Kasey Perkins edged Ouachita's Ksenija Kraic in a thriller, finishing in
2:28.65, only .13 seconds ahead of Kraic.

DSU's swimming and diving squads will return to action on February 19-21,
as they host the NSISC Championships.
