Emerson’s Four Wins Pace Tulane Swimming To 175-66 Win Over Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala., January 30. FRESHMAN Taylor Emerson posted individual wins in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley, and helped lead the 200-yard medley relay team to victory, as the Tulane University swim team dominated NAIA power Spring Hill College, 175-66, Friday evening at the Arthur Outlaw Recreation Center.

Emerson was one of six individuals to post individual wins as the Green Wave won all 14 events of the dual meet. Swimming off events, the Tulane team combined to set 12 season-low times, including Leslie Christian who set a lifetime-best 10:23.94 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. With the win, Tulane improves to 12-3 on the year, including a 12-2 mark in dual meet competition.

“We looked at this meet as another chance to prepare for the Conference USA Championships in February,” head coach Daniella Irle said. “We swam hard in practice this morning and came out tonight and had a great meet. We used the morning practice to simulate the preliminaries, took the pool tonight like it was the finals, and the team responded really well.

“This was the final time we will swim in our off events, and it is encouraging to know that even though we’re not swimming in our best events that we can come out and dominate a meet the way we did today.”

Emerson won the 100 back with a time of 1:02.71, the 200 back at 2:12.29 and the 400 IM with 4:38.78 on the clock. She also teamed with Katherine McCoy, Monica Jones and Linda McEachrane to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:52.60.

Also posting individual victories were Jessica Hughes, Jones, McEachrane, Katie McGuire and Amanda Williams. Hughes won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.47, and Jones claimed the 100-yard breaststroke title at 1:10.01. McEachrane took the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:58.29 and posted a season-low 2:35.47 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

McGuire won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 25.83 and season-best 56.07, respectively, and Williams emerged victorious in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:01.28 and posted a season-low 2:13.60 to win the 200 fly.

In the final event of the meet, the quartet of McCoy, Underwood, Elizabeth Carey and McEachrane won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.10.
