Yabe, Richards Are Mountain West Athletes of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., January 30. BYU junior Diogo de Oliveria Yabe and Utah sophomore Sterling Richards have been named Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. This is the first career weekly honor for Yabe and the second of the season for Richards.

Yabe, a Parana, Brazil, native, turned in three individual victories, a second-place individual finish and a relay win last week, helping BYU to conference wins over Air Force and Wyoming.

He started the week with victories in the 200 individual medley (1:52.71) and a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (46.54) in the Cougar win over the Falcons.

Against Wyoming, he won the 200 freestyle (1:41.36) and swam the 100 butterfly in 49.87, setting a new Corbett Pool record in the process. He also had a hand in breaking another Corbett Pool record as a part of the 200 freestyle relay team which turned in a time of 1:22.49 for the victory.

Richards swept the board events in Utah's two conference meet victories last week. Against Wyoming, he turned in scores of 300 in the 1-meter and 315.30 in the 3-meter, then followed with scores of 317.7 and 329.92 in the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively, to complete the weekend sweep.
