Florida Atlantic Women Dominate Indian River and Florida International

FT. PIERCE, Fla, January 24. FLORIDA International joined Florida Atlantic University’s annual meet with Indian River Community on Saturday as the FAU women dominated the pool winning eight events. The Lady Owls overtook the Golden Panthers 156-69 and the Pioneers 158-61, while the men’s team feel 113-110 to IRCC after finishing second in the final event, the 400-yard freerelay.

The Owls won the first three events to take an early lead as both teams won the 400-yard medley relays. Rich Marzonie, Travis Howard, Kenny Anderson and Pavel Babaev recorded a time of 3:26.89 to win the event by more than nine seconds over IRCC. After taking the 400-medley relay in 3:55.94, the women’s team went on to sweep the relays as the team won 400-yard free relay in 3:35.06.

Geni Burts helped out the women’s side with two first-place finishes. The freshman from Pembroke Pines edged out FIU’s Claudia Barsi in the 1000 free by .94 seconds with a time of 10:17.00 before winning the 500 free in 5:03.50.

The team also picked up victories in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Valeria Dalmastro touched the wall in 24.49 to lead the pack as FAU took the top-five spots in the event. Lisa Andersson used a time of 53.02 in the 100 free to take home first place.

Extending the points lead in the 200 IM, Emma Petersson (2:07.76) led the trio of Geni Burts (2:11.67) and Kelly Pancake (2:12.62) to a sweep of the event. Ellie Weberg, the freshman record holder in the 100 and 200 breaststroke won the 200 breast in 2:20.93

After teaming with the 400-medley relay for the win, captain Travis Howard pick up a victory in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.77. Adam Zeibig and Scott Hobson were the other two men to pick up first place finishes. They won the 200 fly (1:53.80) and 200 backstroke (1:52.19), respectively.

Diver, Matt Streicher kicked off his 2004 campaign under a new diving coach and picked up two first-place finishes. In the 1-meter and 3-meter events he posted scores of 270.90 and 234.00, respectively.
