Pacific Men Fall to Stanford

STANFORD, Calif, January 17. THE Stanford men's swimming team improved its dual meet record with a 107-92 victory over Pacific this afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal kicked off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 medley relay as the team of Kyle Ransom, Thomas Brown, Ben Wildman- Tobriner and Matt Crowe turned in a winning time of 3:26.35 to edge teammates Eric DiIulio, Gary Marshall, Michael Passey and Bobby O' Bryan (3:27.16). Stanford followed that event with another 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle. Michael McLean clocked in at 9:10.20 to narrowly beat teammate Andy Grant (9:10.29). Freshman Ben Wildman-Tobriner took top honors in the 200 freestyle in a time of1:40.69.

The Cardinal took two of the top three spots in the 50 freestyle with frosh Hongzhe Sun placing first (21.33) and teammate Matt Crowe taking third (21.57). Stanford swept the 200 IM as Kyle Ransom (1:52.66) beat out Gary Marshall (1:54.40) and Dan Trupin (1:54.41). Event six was the 200 butterfly as Cardinal Mark Stephens led Stanford with a second-place showing in a time of 1:53.92.

Another 1-2-3 finish opened up Stanford's lead as Andy Grant (46.44), Michael McLean (46.96) and Matt Crowe(47.28) took top honors in the 100 freestyle. Kyle Ransom was the top Cardinal finisher in the 200 backstroke, taking third in a time of 1:54.24. Hongzhe Sun won his second event of the afternoon with a victory in the 500 freestyle (4:31.55). Teammate Thomas Brown finished third, touching the wall in4:40.75.

Cardinal Gary Marshall turned in the top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.92), followed by teammate Dan Trupin (2:12.75). Pacific's "A" relay team won the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, in a time of 3:08.13.
