Elka Graham Continues to Shine Takes 100 free, Callus Repeats with Second Win in the 100 Free on Day Five of New South Wales Age and Open Champs

SYDNEY, Australia, January 17. ELKA Graham tonight gave some indication that she may well be in contention for a highly prized berth in the Aussie 400 relay team when the 22 year-old produced another strong performance in the 100 freestyle.

Graham won the event for women 19 & over in the smart time of 55.91 and not far off her PR of 55.67 set at this meet last year. Promising Victorian Shayne Reese was second in 56.15, with 26-year-old Sarah Ryan, an Atlanta Olympic finalist in this event, third in 56.56.

Outstanding 16-year-old Melissa Mitchell clocked another PR when she won her age final in 56.29 having already clocked 56.66 in the prelims to break the State age record of 56.90 held by Olympic silver medalist Kirsten Thompson. The silver medal went to Victorian Danni Miatke who clocked a promising 56.94.

Twenty-four year-old, Queenslander Ashley Callus was also untroubled to clean up the Open 100 freestyle in 49.83 after having clocked 49.78 to win the Age title last night.

Jim Piper continued to show good early form with a fast 2:12.12 to destroy his opposition in the Open 200 breaststroke final. Luke Trickett, the second fastest qualifier was DQ’ed. Piper’s Campbelltown club-mate Felicity Galvez clocked 2:11.22 to easily win the women’s Open 200 fly.

Local lad Andrew Burns took out the men’s 19 & over 200 backstroke in 2:01.82 from Victorian Patrick Murphy 2:02.45.

AIS based Justin Norris continued his strong performances at this meet with an easy win in the men’s 19 & over 200 IM in 2:05.83, after having already taken third in the Open 200 breaststroke.

Sarah Kasoulis took out the women’s 19 & over 200 breaststroke in 2:32.41 and Sarah Paton took the Open 800 freestyle in 8:45.95
