Henry, Mills, Callus Pace Day Four of Queensland Champs

BRISBANE, January 7. WORLD-CLASS performances by Jodie Henry, Alice Mills and Ashley Callus highlighted Day 4 at the Queensland Open and Age Championship at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane.

Henry outsprinted Libby Lenton to take the women's 100 free, 55.70 to 55.74, with Sarah Ryan fourth one second in arrears. US Junior National Team swimmers Ava Ohlgren, 15, and Jan Illescas, 16, finished sixth (58.16) and ninth (58.64p), respectively.

Mills swam to a convincing win in the 200 IM, touching in 2:14.26. Fifteen year-old Julia Smit garnered a bronze for the US team with her 2:17.86, as four other Americans notched top-10 placings. Ann Ohlgren was seventh in 2:22.15 (2:20.29p), while in prelims Kate Dwelley was seventh (2:21.34), Jan Illescas eighth (2:22.57) and Katy Houston ninth (2:22.69).

Ashley Callus, still fighting an illness that has plagued him for more than a year, sprinted to victory in the men's 100 free, out-touching Casey Flouch 50.11 to 50.26. Gil Stovall placed fourth for the US Juniors in 51.51.

Seventeen year-old Aussie Marieke Guehrer swam a swift 1:02.72 to take the women's 100 back, while promising American 14 year-old, Tricia Weaner, was third in 1:03.96 and Melissa Marik, 15, touched fifth (1:05.03). Skye Elbert, second in the 50 back yesterday, was seventh in prelims in 1:05.93.

Papua New Guinea's Ryan Pini won his second event today, again setting a national record, when he sprinted a 55.77 for 100 meters backstroke. Yesterday he won the 50 back in 26.37. Britain's James Hickman at 57.38 was a distant second. Caleb McDermott finished seventh for the US in 58.77 (58.44p).

Justin Norris, winner of the 200 fly yesterday, notched gold medal #2 today with a solid victory in the 200 IM (2:03.08). CJ Nuess placed fifth for the US Juniors in 2:06.09.
