Texas A&M’s Danielle Townsend Named Big 12 Swimmer of the Month

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, December 19. TEXAS A&M junior Danielle Townsend was named Big 12 Female Swimmer of the Month by the Big 12 Conference on Thursday.

Townsend, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., turned in a yeoman effort against Big 12 opponent Kansas on Dec. 6. The freestyle sprinter won the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle races in addition to swimming the anchor leg on A&M's winning 400-freestyle relay.

Townsend's honor marks the third consecutive month that an A&M female swimmer has won Big 12 Swimmer of the Month honors. Freshman Rebecca Sturdy was named the Big 12 Female Swimmer of the Month in October and November.

Entering this season, the Aggies had won the Big 12 Female Swimmer of the Month award only one time since the inception of the conference (Stacie Karnes, Jan. 1998). A&M's string of success couldn't be more timely in that the Aggies will host the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on March 18-20.

Iowa State's Linda Wagner was named the Big 12 Female Diver of the Month while Texas' Ian Crocker and Jonathan Linette won the swimming and diving honors, respectively, on the men's side. Texas A&M's Matt Rose won the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Month award in each of the first two months of the season. The Aggies have won six, of a possible 12, conference swimming and diving athlete of the month awards so far this season.
