McCawley and Weir Continue Winning Ways at Music City Invite

By Brian Haddad

NASHVILLE, December 6. THE events may have changed, but many of the winners stayed the same on the second night of the Music City Invitational in Nashville.

Swim Atlanta's Amanda Weir followed her impressive win in the 200 yard Freestyle last night with wins in the 50 and 500 yard Freestyles Saturday. Weir's 22.73 in the 50 Free was just .13 off the Tracy Caulkins Competition Pool Record she set one year ago at this meet, but was still good enough for a National Championships Qualifying Time. Weir also won the Consolation Final in the 100 yard Butterfly (57.22).

Memphis Thunder's Margo McCawley, having posted the swim of the meet to date with her amazing 200 yard Backstroke Friday evening, cruised to a 55.11 in the 100 yard Butterfly. The swim was better than the National Championships Standard. She also placed third in the 50 yard Freestyle with a 24.00.

The men's freestyle events offered the spectators at Centennial Sportsplex perhaps the two best races of the evening. Nashville Aquatic Club's Gilliam brothers, Michael and Craig, placed first and second in the 50 yard Freestyle swimming to times of 20.62 and 20.83 respectively. Anderson Barracudas standout Kevin Nead claimed the 500 yard Freestyle in a come from behind win over Swim Atlanta's Matt Bartlett. Nead finished in 4:32.30 just better than Bartlett's 4:33.00.

Swim Atlanta's women and Nashville's men closed Saturday's Finals just as they did on Friday, winning their medley relay events in National Championship Qualifying Times.

Nashville Aquatic Club extended its lead to 370 points over Swim Atlanta heading into the final day of competition. Pilot-Knoxville, Lakeside Seahawks, and Carmel Swim Club round out the Top 5. The meet continues tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 9:00 a.m.
